When I was working on the new site for Equine Essential Wellness, we hit a little issue: the featured images in Authority Pro are a bit odd sized. Angie’s existing featured images were too big, and the main part of the image or text copy was being cut off. But only on certain sizes.
I dug into the code and discovered that there are two “featured image” sizes for Authority Pro. On individual posts, the image shows up as a hero image and is 1200 x 385 px. And it looks really good.
But on Blog Pages, Archives, and widgets, the image is cropped to 680 x 290 px. Not only is this a drastically different size, it’s a drastically different aspect ratio. And since it’s a hard crop, parts of your images (and text) might get cut off if you use the 1200 x 385 px size.
Soooo what do you do? Well, you don’t have to do anything. I did it for you! Armed with a handy dandy calculator and Photoshop, I came up with a template for featured images in Authority Pro. This way, you know exactly how the image is going to crop and can make sure your images look perfect on all of your pages.
Essentially, you want to use the full size of 1200 x 385 px. But you want to make sure that your text and other important elements are contained to a 900 px section in the center. That way when the theme uses your image, it looks right on both single posts and archives/widgets.
How to Use the Template
First, click on it above to download the full-size image. (To download images, Right Click > Save As or drag it to your desktop.)
Then, go to your image editor of choice (Photoshop, Canva, it’ll work anywhere!) and open up the image.
Finally, use it to design your featured image! I’d recommend making it a semi-transparent layer on top of your featured image, so you can line up the elements underneath it and make sure everything fits correctly.
Once you’re done, upload your new featured image to your Authority Pro-powered website and watch as your images appear on your blog perfectly!
