In Summer 2022, I launched a brand new website for Harpswell Aging at Home. HAH is a non-profit community organization dedicated to helping seniors age in their homes in Harpswell. They provide a wide variety of resources and programs for elderly Harpswell citizens, including home repairs, drives to appointments, and meals.
When we started, they had a very basic website builder site that didn’t serve them. It was clunky, hard to navigate, and hard to update. The first course of action was to bring them into the WordPress ecosystem, so they had an easy-to-use CMS to manage their website. Next I built them a custom theme. For this site, we utilized the Gutenberg editor and Genesis Blocks to create custom blocks to build the site out. This way the back-end of the site matches the front-end, and it’s easy to know exactly what content you’re editing.
One of the big goals of this project was to make it easy to navigate. HAH’s audience is made of up senior citizens and caretakers, and it’s important that their programs and resources, which most people come to the website to learn about, are easily accessible. We also wanted to put an emphasis on news and upcoming events – creating a “hub” for HAH that people can check regularly to keep tabs on what HAH is doing in the community. In order to achieve these goals I created a very clean, minimal design, using clear indicators for buttons and links. Multiple pages utilize anchor links to make it easy for people to quickly drop down the page and find the information they need.
